For example if you have a site on Audi Cars then it makes total sense to become a respected member on all giant Audi and Car forums around the net where most will have over 10,000 active members. Once you are a respected member you can put links to your site in your post signatures getting multiple dynamic backlinks and daily related traffic. Another way is to create social bookmark accounts (digg,stumbleupon etc) and make sure you register your content into these web 2.0 platforms so other members can view it and hopefully a viral marketing reaction will occur. Another option that is expected these days is blogging. You should set up a blog horizontal to your main site and link back to your main site from it. Then you should pursue other related bloggers in your niche topic and post comments on their blogs giving a link back to your blog so that blogger can come back to your blog and post a comment.
